Artworks by Emily Günther

I am most inspired by the natural connection between life and death. In this painting, I wanted to show that the two do not exist in isolation but are linked like old friends. The child represents life, with its vibrant colors, the flower, and an open, friendly expression. The large blue head, on the other hand, symbolizes death. It appears calm, contemplative, and non-threatening—almost as if it were accompanying life and checking in to see how it is doing.

Even though they are complete opposites, neither can exist without the other. This reflects many human relationships; I believe almost everyone has—or has had—such a connection, whether romantic, platonic, or familial.

Nature also inspires me in this regard, as it constantly reveals the cycle of coming into being and passing away. The bold colors and numerous brushstrokes are meant to convey the vitality of the moment, while the darker, cooler tones associated with death evoke a sense of calm and transience. To me, the painting signifies that death is not merely an end, but an integral part of life and its natural cycle.
